Why French-language .com domains are still undervalued
English-language single-word .coms in mainstream categories cleared six figures a decade ago. Their French equivalents, addressing 300M francophone speakers across France, Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec and West Africa, often still trade in the $10k–$80k range. The mismatch is a residue of who bought domains first, not a reflection of market size.
Why the discount exists
- US-based domainers dominated the 1995–2010 land grab and priced against English demand.
- French buyers historically defaulted to .fr, leaving strong .coms available.
- Search engines and AI answer boxes now weight exact-match native-language .coms heavily.
Where the demand is going
French D2C brands, wellness startups and fintech now compete for the same premium brand real estate their US counterparts locked up years ago. Exact French category .coms — beauté, minceur, épargne, immobilier — are the obvious plays, and the ones that transact are increasingly going to strategic buyers, not domainers.
Case in point: minceur.com
Minceur (slimness/weight loss) is the exact French search term for a €3.6B category. The English equivalent (slimming.com, slimness.com) trades at mid-to-high five figures. The French version, addressing an underserved and less competitive market, is arguably a stronger acquisition today.
